Ucluelet, BC Canada

Ucluelet is a First Nations name, purported to mean "Good Harbour." Situated on the west side of Ucluelet Inlet at the western entrance to Barkley Sound it is about 50 miles from Port Alberni if you are traveling by sea.

Until the early 1870's, Ucluelet was a First Nations village with the main reservation at the entrance of the inlet on the east side, just as it is today.

Ucluelet has made its way through various encounters with resource extraction industries including fur sealing, mining, whaling (there was a whaling station in Sechart, near Port Alberni that opened in 1903 and closed in 1925), fishing, and forestry.

Today, Ucluelet is focused on tourism. With more developable land than their neighbours to the north, the district is focused on large developments like the newly planned 1 Hotel Vancouver Island at Wyndansea, complete with the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club of Canada.
