Straight Line

Clayoquot Sound is home to a large number of resident black bears.  Many of the whale watching outfitters will take you out on the ocean to witness these incredible mammals in their own habitat from the vantage of the water.

Also expect to see eagles, seals, and other wildlife as you cruise along the shore-line.  This trip is different from whale watching as the emphasis is directed to land mammals and concentrates close to shore.  Bear watching tours are around 2-3 hours with rates similar to Whale Watching. Expect wonderful photography opportunities, especially for those endowed with a very large lens.

One of the advantages of black bear tours is that the boat travels in protected water around Meares Island where the ocean swell is minimal to nonexistent. On a calm day, the ocean is as smooth as glass ("glassy"), which provides exceptional opportunities for nature photography as well as close encounters with bears.

Recommended times of the year for bear watching trips in Tofino are late spring through early October. It is possible to see bears at other times of the year on a charter, but it is always recommended that folks ask the tour operator about the likelihood of glimpsing bears before dropping $80 per person (on average) for a trip.
