Notes on Tofino Fishing
Most Tofino Charter operators offer a private group charter, with all necessary fishing equipment and tackle provided as part of your outfitted excursion. Many local saltwater charter operators offer a minimum 5-6 hour fishing trip as well as full day options. Fishing licenses can be purchased in Tofino prior to departure and will run Canadian residents approximately $6 for the day plus a salmon stamp for about another $7. Non-residents can expect to pay a bit more per day plus the salmon stamp.
Purchase a British Columbia To catch a crab, a daily license is required and there is a limit of six Dungeness crabs per day with minimum size requirements. You are only allowed to take male crab – please ask about how to make the distinction, as our local population depends on this rule. Contact the local fisheries at 725-3468 or check the poster located in the window at the post office (First and Campbell Street) or the local Tackle Shop for further information. The regulations for the 2009 fishery are expected to be a daily limit of 2 Coho Salmon and 2 Chinook Salmon, 1 Halibut, 3 ling cod and 3 Rockfish per day per licensed person. Your charter operator will know the restrictions on all species, with in-season updates posted at the Fisheries office and Tackle Shop in Tofino. Generally you should expect to pay around $110.00 per hour for offshore Vessels (22-25ft.) and $90.00 for inshore/Fly fishing Vessels (17-20ft.). There will be a minimum hourly charge, and the price you pay is for the boat and guide, not per person. Most local charter vessels can host 3-4 anglers, and you can also wait-list to share the boat with others. Generally, afternoon fishing charters have less hourly minimums than A.M. charters. |

within Clayoquot Sound. Steelhead, Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout inhabit these waters, and are carefully released on all of these unique excursions. Bring

You should be prepared with Warm layered clothing, a Hat, Sunglasses, Sunscreen, Food and Beverages and a camera. For those prone to motion sickness, you may choose to take an anti-nausea pill well in advance of your fishing charter. For visiting anglers with their own boats, you can purchase all types of quality tackle, Fly gear and outdoor clothing at a fully stocked Fly & Tackle shop in Tofino. Boat LaunchingMotorized boats can be launched and moored for a fee at the Fourth Street Dock (250-725-4441) in Tofino or launched from Grice Bay boat launch inside the National Park. Motorized boat launch is prohibited from all public beaches. Infractions carry fines as well as an unforeseen environmental penalty. There is an excellent public kayak launch located beside First Street Dock, in front of the Fred Tibbs condo building at the end of First Street.
