Father: Thomas Stokes Guppy, Physcian in general practice, born in Sidbury, Devon, England, lived in Palmouth, Cornwall, England.

Mother: Charlotte Ann Brougham, daughter of surgeon Stephen Brougham.

Henry's family were well-to-do landowners in Farway, Devon for generations. In his book "Homes of Family Names", Henry describes them as a "gentile" family. At any rate, Henry's grandfather, William Guppy, was an attorney at law and owned Sidbury Castle, Devon.

Henry had a twin brother, William Good Guppy (named for his grandparents, Wiliam Guppy and Betsey Good of Sidbury castle), who died at Erzerum, Armenia, in 1877 during the Russo-Turkish War. He had one other brother and four sisters.
