Notes on Sea Kayaking in Clayoquot Sound

Much of the water in Clayoquot Sound is protected from the open ocean by island barriers and offers exciting opportunities for everyone to enjoy the tranquil and engaging art of kayaking.

Most outings are guided by professional guides and offer safe and informative journeys. No experience is required when with qualified guides.

Tofino has a new self-kayak launch at the bottom of First Street to the left of the dock. Long term parking is available in the lot north of the district office. Please be a responsible Kayaker and practice "Leave no trace ethics." Ask your guides or kayak rental outfit for more info.

If you are planning a kayaking trip around Tofino, please remember a few important safety notes:

  • The tides are constant and can their speed can be extremely surprising. Luckily they are predictable, as long as you remember to bring a tide chart and a watch.
  • The currents can be fierce. We've watched many an unsuspecting kayaker magically move backwards despite a strong forward paddle stroke. If you're inexperienced with ocean currents, It's best to get a few pointers from folks at the local kayak shop.
  • Bears and wolves are common in Clayoquot Sound. Thankfully, there have been very few incidents where animals have become pests in our lovely wilderness. We prefer to keep it that way, so please make sure to take care with your food and garbage. Quite simply, if you pack it in -- pack it out.
